Early Pregnancy (7 - 10 weeks) Scans are available on Monday mornings (9:00am - 1:00pm), between 11:00am - 4:30pm on Tuesdays and between 3:30pm - 4:30pm on Thursdays.

What can the scan show?

- An intrauterine pregnancy (if the baby is in the right place).

- The baby's heartbeat.

- The approximate date of the pregnancy - calculated by measuring the length of the baby.

- The pelvic region, including if cysts are present on the ovaries.

Preparation?

- A full bladder is needed for the scan. Please finish drinking one pint of water, one hour before your appointment time.

- If the Sonographer cannot see clearly over the top of your abdomen/tummy, an internal ultrasound scan may be offered, which can often provide more detail. A chaperone (Dragon Ultrasound assistant) would be present in the room with the Sonographer for this scan. Please see below, for more information about an internal ultrasound scan.

Report:

You will be given a printed copy of the ultrasound scan report, and two black and white scan photos.

Extra photos/Images from the scan:

More images/photos from the scan, including digital copies, can also be purchased at the reception desk.

Can I take photos in the examination room?

No. During the scan, the Sonographer can print glossy black and white photos from the scan for you, and more copies (including digital copies) can be purchased at the reception desk. However, due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.

Can you tell me the gender of baby on a 7–11-week scan?

No. Our Sonographer can identify the gender of babies from a gestation of 16 weeks, onwards.

Can all abnormalities be picked up on an ultrasound scan?

No, but significant problems can sometimes be identified, and ultrasound is particularly useful for checking baby’s size, and whether the amniotic fluids levels are low, normal, or high.

TV Scans (Transvaginal Scans)

This examination often allows the Sonographer to look more closely at the ovaries, womb (uterus) and endometrium. The word “transvaginal” means “through the vagina.” For this scan, a Dragon Ultrasound chaperone will be present, you will be given privacy to change into a gown and then asked to lie down on the examination couch with your knees bent. A small probe with a sterile cover is gently passed into the vagina, so that ultrasound images can be taken. The examination may cause some discomfort, but is not normally painful, and usually only takes a few minutes.
