FAQs

  • Sound waves used during an ultrasound scan do not produce any known risk. There is no exposure to radiation. External/Internal ultrasound scans are normally painless, although sometimes there may be discomfort as the probe is pressed on the body, or when having an internal scan, when the probe is inserted.

Ultrasound scans at Dragon Ultrasound are always performed by experienced, Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Sonographers, who have undertaken CASE accredited, post-graduate ultrasound courses. The ultrasound machines used in the clinic are of high specification and are inspected regularly to ensure that safety standards are maintained.

  • Your scan will be performed by an experienced Sonographer, who has completed a post-graduate CASE accredited ultrasound course and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  • The sonographer will check your details, explain the examination to you. You will then either be asked to sit on a chair or lay down on an examination couch, depending on the body-area being examined. An ultrasound probe, which has ultrasound gel on it, will be moved over your skin at the region being examined – the sonographer may need to press firmly, but it should not normally be painful.

For some scans it may be necessary to change into a gown, but you will be given privacy to do this. A Dragon Ultrasound chaperone will be present for intimate examinations; however, a chaperone can also be present for any other examination if you wish to have one. Further details about all examinations can be found on the navigation bar at the top of the screen, under “Which scan should I book?”

At the end of the scan the sonographer will give you a verbal report. You will also be given a printed copy and/or emailed an electronic copy of the ultrasound scan report, usually within 24 hours.

For more information you can call the clinic on 01443 224397 or email us.

  • The amount of adipose tissue on a client’s body can negatively affect the quality of an ultrasound image. When scanning a client with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) the Sonographer will often be required to “press the transducer hard against their bodies to achieve the image quality required for a medical diagnosis.” (Siemens-Healthineers, 2021).

  • The best time to obtain good pictures of the baby is usually between 26 - 30 weeks gestation, when baby is still relatively small, with plenty of fluid around it.

  • For the following scans you will need to drink one pint of water, one hour prior to the appointment, to ensure you have a full bladder: Early Reassurance, Dating Reassurance, Women’s Check scans (Post-Menopause, Fertility, General, Kidneys/Bladder and Upper Abdomen, Complete), Men’s Check scan (Upper and Lower Abdomen, Complete), Kidneys and Bladder.

  • Clients only need to fast if having one of the following scans: Upper Abdomen (General or Liver and Gallbladder), Men’s Check (Upper and Lower Abdomen, Complete), Aorta, Women’s Check (Complete).

Fasting for these examinations requires you to drink/eat nothing but water, for at least 6 hours prior to the scan.

  • Yes. In most cases, clients receive a paper copy of their report shortly after their examination. Some reports can need more time to write, so will be emailed to you within 24 hours of your appointment.

If required, the report can be sent to your GP and/or private referrer at no extra cost.

  • Pregnancy scan clients will receive glossy black and white photos from their examination; those having a Gold 4D Reassurance scan will also receive digital copies of the images.

For all other clients, copies of the images are not routinely given. GP doctors, consultants and other healthcare professionals usually only ask for a written report from a diagnostic ultrasound scan and do not request the images. However, if needed, digital copies of the images can be sent to you for just £5.00

  • No, but during pregnancy scans, the Sonographer can print glossy black and white photos for you, and for other examinations, copies of the images can be purchased separately at the reception desk. However, due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs and videos cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
