Price:

Total appointment length:

20 minutes.

Common reason for the scan?

To check the location of the placenta.

What is included in the scan?

- A measurement from the lower edge of the placenta to the internal birth canal, is done transabdominally.

- If necessary, another measurement from the lower edge of the placenta to the internal birth canal, is done transvaginally. For further information about TV scans, see below.

- Measurements of baby's head, abdomen, and femur (thigh bone).

- Estimation of baby’s weight (if gestation is 24 weeks or more).

*For return clients - there must have been at least 14 days since the last pregnancy reassurance scan at Dragon Ultrasound, for the growth measurements and estimated fetal weight to be checked again.

- Check of amniotic fluid levels.

- Check of Doppler/blood flow through umbilical artery.

- Location of placenta.

- Baby's sex. Please note: Ultrasound cannot be 100% accurate in sexing the baby.

- Copy of report.

- Three glossy black and white scan photos of baby.

Preparation?

A full bladder is helpful for the scan. Please finish drinking one pint of water, one hour before your appointment time. If you are at an advanced stage of the pregnancy, and this is too difficult, do the best that you can comfortably manage.

Can I buy a “heartbeat” bear?

Yes, if baby is over 24 weeks gestation. Ask the receptionist for more details about this, before entering the scan room.

Report:

You will be given a printed copy of the ultrasound scan report, and two glossy black and white scan photos.

Extra photos/Images from the scan:

More images/photos from the scan, including digital copies, can also be purchased at the reception desk.

Can I take photos in the examination room?

No. During the scan, the Sonographer can print glossy photos from the scan for you, and more copies (including digital copies) can be purchased at the reception desk. However, due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.

Can you tell me the gender of baby on a “placenta location” scan?

Yes, our Sonographers can identify the gender of babies from a gestation of 16 weeks, onwards.

Can all abnormalities be picked up on an ultrasound scan?

No, but significant problems can sometimes be identified, and ultrasound is particularly useful for checking baby’s size, and whether the amniotic fluids levels are low, normal, or high.

TV Scans (Transvaginal Scans)

This examination often allows the Sonographer to look more closely at the ovaries, womb (uterus) and endometrium. The word “transvaginal” means “through the vagina.” For this scan, a Dragon Ultrasound chaperone will be present, you will be given privacy to change into a gown and then asked to lie down on the examination couch with your knees bent. A small probe with a sterile cover is gently passed into the vagina, so that ultrasound images can be taken. The examination may cause some discomfort, but is not normally painful, an usually only takes a few minutes.
